Building a greener future turning climate through innovation

Introduction
Climate innovation has a credibility problem, and it is one the sector created. A decade of announcements about breakthrough technologies has produced a great deal of coverage and comparatively little installed capacity. The work that matters now is less glamorous: deploying what already works, faster.
The technologies are mostly ready
Solar, wind, batteries and heat pumps are all mature, manufactured at scale and cheaper than the fossil alternatives in most markets. The constraint has moved from the laboratory to the queue — grid connections, planning consent, and the number of trained installers a region can field in a given year.
Where new invention still earns its place
There are genuine gaps: long-duration storage beyond a few hours, high-temperature industrial heat, cement and steel chemistry, and aviation fuel. These are hard problems with no cheap incumbent solution, and they are where research funding buys the most future emissions reduction per pound.

Innovation in delivery, not just in hardware
The most valuable recent advances have been procedural — standardised heat-pump installations, pre-approved grid connection templates, financing that survives a change of tenant. None of it patents well, and all of it moves more carbon than the average pilot project.
The honest summary
Innovation is necessary and insufficient. The decisive variable this decade is how quickly known solutions can be built, and that is a question about permits, skills and capital rather than about invention.
