Transforming Waste Into a Create Sustainable Resource

Introduction
Treating waste as a resource is a good instinct that produces bad projects when applied indiscriminately. Some waste streams are genuinely valuable feedstock; others cost more energy to recover than they return, and the difference is not obvious from the outside.
Sort at source or not at all
Contamination is what decides whether a stream has value. Clean, separated cardboard is a commodity; the same cardboard wet with food waste is a disposal cost. Almost every successful recovery scheme is really a successful separation scheme wearing a different name.
Organics are the underrated stream
Food and garden waste are usually the largest fraction by weight and the worst-behaved in landfill, where they generate methane. Anaerobic digestion turns the same material into gas and a soil amendment, and the economics work at municipal scale in a way that many higher-profile options do not.

Be careful with energy from waste
Incineration with energy recovery is better than landfill and worse than not producing the waste. Its real risk is contractual: plants are financed on guaranteed tonnage for twenty-five years, which quietly commits a region to keep generating waste it has just promised to reduce.
The test to apply
Before building anything, ask what happens to the project if the stream halves. A recovery scheme that only works while waste keeps growing is not a sustainability project.
